Apple week was huge success! We had a great time incorporating apples and Johnny Appleseed into EVERY activity. Thank you to parents for donating both your time and supplies to make it a great week. We're already looking forward to our next theme! We have been working the past 2 weeks on some of our addition math facts. We started with making 5 and have transitioned into making 10. From here we will be working with number bonds as well as subtraction. Memorizing the facts will help students to get a solid foundation with our base 10 number system. We will be able to use it with place value, addition of greater values, and in relation to fact families and missing addends. Practicing these facts at home will help reinforce the activities we are doing at home. Sumdog is another great way to get in practice of math facts. Below are some pictures from our math activities and some pages from our interactive math journals. We had an awesome week.! The kids have really gotten into our morning and afternoon routines and we have been able to get many activities accomplished. This week in our literature block the students practiced 2 activities. We have been building our stamina in both read to self and work on word centers. This week we accomplished our goal of 20 minutes of reading to self. We were all so excited to get to color in all the way to the top of our graph! In work on words we practice with our spelling words for the week which had short e and short i sounds. We carried this pattern over to our shared reading poem as well. Next week we will be adding a listening to reading activity. In math we learned about the facts of 5 and the facts of 10. Students are working to memorize these facts so that they can build their math facts around them. This week will will continue to memorize our "Friends of Ten" and learn how knowing these can help us solve other math problems including subtraction. Enjoy the pictures and check back in for more updates next week! Sumdog is my FAVORITE educational website we use. It is super fun and provides great results for children and their math skills. Here are a few important key details about the website.
We have had a wonderful first 2 weeks of school. The students have learned the names of their classmates and the routines and schedule of our day. We began our math and writing journals and have already added two pieces to our shared reading notebooks. This past week in reading we focused on describing characters. We took a close look at some famous characters and looked for words in the book that described them. Then we had a turn to do the same with other books in our classroom library. In math we have been practicing counting, reading, and writing number to 120. We worked with the 120's chart to play the game guess my number. We also learned about even and odd numbers. We are looking forward to another great week. We will begin our addition and subtraction unit, writer's workshop, and explore the different types of settings in stories. We will also practice words with short e and short i sounds. |
